Horror punk was invented by kids in New Jersey who loved monster matinees more than they loved being liked, and its most famous face was borrowed from a 1946 film serial about a villain in a grinning skull mask. The skull went on a single sleeve in 1979 and never left. The Meowsfits' version was borrowed from somewhere closer: the face your cat makes at 3 a.m. in the hallway, backlit, silent, absolutely certain you cannot see it. The original crew ran their fan club out of a mother's basement — silkscreening shirts, stuffing records into mailers, answering fan letters by hand. The Fiend Club lives on in every cat waiting behind a door in the dark. Membership is not optional. You were enrolled the day you brought it home.
